The Sculpture Garden Takeover Is Here

Hey Loveland — if you only open one Konnx email this year, this might be the one. Sculpture in the Park lands right on top of this weekend, and it's the kind of thing that's easy to forget about until it's already happening a mile from your house.

If you only had time for ONE thing this weekend, what's the move?

Free shuttle buses running for Sculpture in the Park. The Gist: Free shuttles run Saturday and Sunday from four pickup points — Orchards Shopping Center, Loveland Olde Golf Course, Cattail Creek Golf Course, and King of Glory Lutheran Church. Why It Matters: Parking near Benson Sculpture Garden is extremely limited during the show — the shuttle is the easier call, not just the polite one. Source.

Part of Benson Sculpture Garden closed through Aug. 16. The Gist: The park's southwest corner is closed for show setup and teardown through mid-August. Why It Matters: If you're used to walking the whole park any time, plan around the closure until then. Source.

Loveland Farmers Market continues through October. The Gist: The market runs Sundays, 9am–1pm, through Oct. 31. Why It Matters: This weekend doesn't have to be your only shot — it's a recurring, easy Sunday habit for the rest of the season. Source.

Wednesday Night Concerts return next week. The Gist: The free downtown concert series continues Wednesday, Aug. 12, with Claire Wright at The Foundry Plaza. Why It Matters: If this weekend runs long, there's another free, low-effort night out already on the calendar. Source.

Loveland Aleworks — 118 W 4th St. Independent, family-owned, known for small-batch ales. A straightforward, no-pretense stop before or after the sculpture show, right in the middle of downtown. Website.

Verboten Brewing & Barrel Project — downtown Loveland. Known for barrel-aged and fruit-forward twists on classic styles — a good pick if you want something different than a standard IPA. Website.

Black Steer Restaurant — 436 N Lincoln Ave. A Loveland institution since 1966, known for in-house aged steaks and a legendary salad bar — the pick if the weekend calls for a proper sit-down dinner. Website.

Sculpture in the Park didn't start as the largest outdoor juried sculpture show in the country — it started as five Loveland sculptors and the local Chamber of Commerce deciding the town needed a show of its own. Dan Ostermiller, George Lundeen, Fritz White, Hollis Williford, and George Walbye put together the first event in Benson Park back in 1984. Four decades later, it's grown into something considerably bigger: 160-plus juried artists, more than 2,000 pieces on display, and a nonprofit — the Loveland High Plains Arts Council — built entirely around running it and expanding the sculpture garden it happens in.

The money matters too. Last year's show brought in more than $1.4 million in sales, with 89% of exhibiting artists selling at least one piece. That revenue doesn't just go to the artists — it funds new permanent acquisitions for Benson Sculpture Garden itself, meaning the free, walkable outdoor art collection Loveland has year-round exists largely because of one weekend in August.

This year marks the 42nd edition. The garden's southwest corner has been closed since Aug. 1 to make room for it. By Friday evening, it'll be full again — and free to walk, for anyone, long after the show packs up.
